Ib Extended Essay Writing Guidelines

Ib Extended Essay Writing Guidelines This would depend heavily on how big/small you write. it’s like different fonts take up different amount of space on a page, so does your specific handwriting. The best way to know your per page word count would be to look at past pages and count the number of words you write for each page. it’s time consuming, but any other estimate is bound not to be accurate since it’s so dependent on your handwriting. You've had your brain-fuelling lunch, and now it's time to get typing. 3,000 words sounds like a lot, and in many ways it is â€" but with your watertight essay plan under your belt, it should just be a case of expanding on all the points you've already listed. Also, if you're using Microsoft Word to write your essay, make use of the automatic referencing system. Now it's time to gather the all-important information and quotes to support your arguments. Again, the type of font used can make the word count higher or lower, but it’s a good rule of thumb for those who are simply looking for a general estimation. Pick the topic that is most interesting and that has enough clear and convincing examples to prove your point. Start with the most obvious or all-encompassing argument, as this will allow you to progressively go into more detail on each of the smaller arguments â€" one of the keys to a good essay. If you're having difficulty deciding what to write about, try brainstorming around the topic. Write down all the ideas that come to mind and you'll see a theme start to emerge. Check out our list of the best foods for brain fuel to see what else will get you off to the best start (and keep that flying start going!). Now, depending on how you've setup your document your page count may vary slightly, but with Arial or Times New Roman 12 point font and conventional margins you should see similar results. 500 word essays are very common throughout middle and high school English curriculums, especially as book reports, or summaries of current events. Why is everything word count these days instead of page count? When I was in school when I was younger, all assignments were page count. For assignments that require double spacing, it would take approximately 250 words to fill the page. However, with a standard 12 point Arial or Times New Roman font and default page margins your results should be about the same. Examples of 750 word count pages include high school essays, questions for take home exams, product reviews and love letters. Use our online word count tool to quickly count how many words are in your essay or blog post. This is not accurate for academic papers with 1″ margins. It might seem a little counter-intuitive to start writing an essay before you've sourced all your quotes and references, but there's a method to our madness. Once you've done this, actually writing the essay should just be a case of bulking out each point and filling in the gaps. You can easily check page count in word processors like Microsoft Word and Google Docs, but for a quick reference use our table below. A word count of 750 words will equal about 1.5 pages single spaced or 3 pages double spaced. Of course it will depend on the word processor settings, what font and font size you're using and page margins. Write down three to five examples to prove your thesis statement for each topic. Use the “SEE” model as a formula for each example. “S” stands for “statement” and is a reiteration of what you’re trying to prove. Next, decide your approach â€" how are you going to tackle the question? It's your essay and, as long as you keep relating your arguments to the question, you can take it in any direction you choose. Don't worry, it's far from the only brain food that'll help you write an essay.

If you make too many errors, your writing will be difficult to understand. Wouldn’t it be a shame for a teacher to miss the excellent points you made because of poor grammar? As an example, I wrote a 12-page paper on the effect of World War II on the rights of women in American society. Had I selected a more vague topic like “American Women in the 1930s and 1940s”, it would have been a far more difficult essay to write. Reviewing is critical to composing a great essay. Some teachers won’t even finish reading essays if they’re not grammatically sound or riddled with spelling errors. Here are a few ways to make your essay/research paper more academically acceptable and better overall. Choose a topic that's appropriate to the paper’s length. Avoid broad topics as you cannot cover them fully due to the limited number of words. Thesis statements are not set in stone; they are meant to change as the paper develops. It is important to have a topic that is specific enough that finding sources is relatively easy, but broad enough that you can write many pages about it. If you're writing a four‐page essay, don't retell the whole history of women's rights. Instead, narrow it down to a more specific subject like one important incident in the women's rights movement. As you write and gather more evidence, your thesis statement may change â€" and that’s okay!

Hubris in Antigone and Oedipus - Literature Essay Samples

The idea of hubris is monumental in a plethora of Greek mythological works. In many ways the excessive pride of certain characters fuels their own destruction. This is certainly true with respect to the characters of Pentheus, Antigone, and Oedipus. All three of these characters demonstrate, through their actions, various degrees of arrogance that seem to undercut the traditional role of the Gods, and thus largely contribute to their downfall. However, it should be noted that while each of these characters demonstrate hubris, they way in which their arrogance manifests itself is unique to each character. Pentheus, the authoritarian newly appointed king of Thebes is immediately troubled with the rising influence and odd rituals that surround Dionysus. He seeks to prove his authority and influence over the kingdom, and crush the leader of these ecstatic rituals, which he perceives as a direct threat to his rule. Early on in the play Pentheus is warned by Tiresias, the old seer o f the kingdom not to over stretch his bounds and to respect Dionysus as he would the other gods. No we don ¹t play at theologians with the gods. We stay close to the hallowed tenets of our fathers, old as time. Nothing can undo them ever. I don ¹t care how brilliant or abstruse the reasons are (Euripides 404). This passage is significant because it provides Pentheus with a direct warning not let his own pompous notions of earthly and temporal power go against the divine will of the gods. Pentheus disregards the warning and goes ahead in a direct act of sacrilege by destroying the sylvan alter and detains Dionysus. As Pentheus interrogates Dionysus he again is issued a direct warning not to go against the will of the gods by persecuting one whom the gods favor. As Dionysus calmly states, Very well, I ¹ll go along with this wrongful undestined destiny, but remember this: Dionysus, who you say does not exist, will wreak revenge on you for this (Euripides 417). The story culminates in Dionysus playing on Pentheus ¹ curiosity and voyeurism regarding the intoxicated hordes of Thebian women, by tricking him to go out to see them in action. Pentheus is brutally ripped apart by the possessed women, yet in effect it was his own actions that caused his destruction. As Dionysus directly addresses the hubris of Pentheus, The sins of jealousy and anger made this Pentheus deal unjustly with one bringing blessings, whom he disgracefully imprisoned and insulted; and so he met his end at the hands of his own kin‹ an unnatural end and yet a just one (Euripides 453).Antigone also over steps her bounds, yet in a drastically different way. Rather than embracing the authoritarian ideals and decrees of Creon, the Stalinist new leader of Thebes, Antigone ¹s dual sense of pride and stubbornness fuels her personal reactions. Her belief that her brother deserves a proper burial seems to transcend logic and directly counter both temporal and divine authority. A ntigone herself, by burying her brother, has taken on the role of the gods. Thus, she contributes to her own downfall. While Antigone believes that her actions are defending a moral good, it is the way in which she goes about her actions that propel her own hubris. She makes the burial rights a public question, rather than using tact and diplomacy to approach Creon‹as Haemon demonstrates. Both Antigone and Creon are wrapped up in a personal struggle that is quite stubborn. Her actions, like that of Creon ¹s, are acts of hubris. The fact that Creon is wrong doesn ¹t justify the actions of Antigone. In this respect both characters are quite similar despite their protagonist nature. As the chorus states, Surpassing belief, the device and cunning that man has attained, and it bringeth him now to evil, now to good (Sophocles 14).Oedipus perhaps demonstrates the most direct and painfully obvious acts of hubris of the three characters. His temper plays a crucial role throu ghout the play, along with his arrogance. He possesses a precipitous rage in his blind quest to uncover his past. Again, his grandiose sense of pride and impulse ignites his destined downfall. From the onset, the vanity of Oedipus is latent when he travels, against warnings, to the oracle of Delphi. His inflated notions of his stature as ruler directly question the authority of the gods, and lead to his eventual decay. Oedipus represents common notions inherent in tragedies of the precarious sense of human prosperity. Oedipus, in an extremely short time, has extreme highs and lows, which demonstrate the classic patterns of the god ¹s rough justice. This sudden and constantly altering nature of fate leads Oedipus to glory, yet his stubborn and arrogant quest to ÂÅ'see ¹ ultimately blinds him, as he is reduced to nothing in an instant. Oedipus ¹ story exemplifies how destiny is inescapable. His quest to outwit fate, in effect, perpetuates his own destruction. This no tion of tragic irony‹trying to run away from destiny yet perpetuating it instead, illustrates the hubris of Oedipus. By disregarding the knowledge and warnings of Teiresias, and thus the gods, Oedipus ¹s stubborn sense of pride goes directly against the will of the gods. Ironically it is Oedipus who states, True; but to force the gods against their will‹that is a thing beyond all power (Sophocles 57). Simply put, Oedipus can not see that his actions are doing just that, and only when his hubris is punished and he losses his literal eyesight, can he finally see the truth.

EVIDENCE BASED PRACTICE QUALITATIVE RESEARCH INTRODUCTION This essay aims to explore the importance of utilising evidence based care while working with clients and other health care providers to form a professional and reliable nursing team. Napoleon Bonaparte Transformational Leadership Essay

Napoleon Bonaparte was a French military leader who conquered most of Europe in the early nineteenth century. After a coup in 1799 he crowned himself emperor in 1804. He abdicated the throne after the French attempted to invade Russia in 1812 and exiled, but he returned to power a few years alter only to resign once again after a crushing defeat at the battle of Waterloo and exiled to the island of Saint Helena and died at age 51. Bonaparte was known as an astute, ambitious, and extremely skilled military strategist as he waged war and expanded his empire. In behavioral Theory, as a militaristic leader Bonaparte would be considered a team manager. He knew what to say and to whom to say it, to accomplish his tasks: â€Å"A leader is a dealer in hope.†. He developed enough of a relationship with his subordinates to identify and adapt what methods of leadership he needed to be successful, whether that was a ruthless dictator, the seen leader, or the strategist. Furthermore, Bonaparte displays many characteristics of an adaptive leadership style. Bonaparte displayed confidence in himself and his leadership as both a military commander and a politician through charisma and displays of riding on the front lines with his army as he led. Resiliency is displayed in the act of his exile, which he returned from and retook his power. Openness and curiosity is present in the way he continued to read and study about the places he moved in to conquer, including militaristic strategies and tactics. He shows his drive through the sweeping overthrow of the monarchy and European territories. Bonaparte was an advent risk taker, the actions of a coup and crowning himself King are just two of many examples. Interacting with piers can result in good behaviors or bad. It depends on who you place yourself around and what kind of morals your friends have. The best way to make good friends is having things in common with people, and sharing the same types of characteristics that each of you have. One thing to remember about being with others is to be yourself and remember your morals. I have had quite a few experiences of not agreeing with my friends, I think everyone has had that problem before. So the question is, what do you do? Well you can answer that in many different ways. It depends on what the argument topic is about. For example, when I was in ninth grade my friends and I had lots of different beliefs about lots of different things. I believed in Jesus Christ and that He died on the cross for our sins and saved us all from eternity in hell. Now this girl’s name is Zoey and she had been one of my best friends for a long time. It was somewhat hard to be her friend though because she did not believe in Jesus Christ. In the Bible it tells us to reach out to unbelievers and try and draw them closer to God by sharing the gospel with them, and that is what I tried to do. Zoey had been raised a lot different from me though, she had never gone to church, or read the Bible, whereas I had been to church and read the Bible my whole life. I understood where she was coming from by not wanting to have anything to do with God because it was a very new thing to her and it might be kind of scary at first, but I really did want her to come to Him so one day I invited her to go to a Wednesday night church with me. On Wednesday night my church has a youth program and a lot of teenagers went. It was a lot different from church because even though we sang and the pastor preached, it w as not necessarily taken as serious as church on a Sunday morning because you were around all your friends. Zoey seemed to be kind of in an uncomfortable position at first, but once we all went in and started singing she started to feel more relaxed. My pastor prayed for us and started teaching. He knows that a lot of us bring new kids with us to the church so he always makes sure to say something about how Jesus died for us and rose again. Now to Zoey, that was all fake and did not seem believable to her, so she kind of shook her head and laughed. As soon as he got into the real message though I could see her starting to take an interest in what he was saying. The pastor usually only preaches on Wednesday nights because he is very good with kids and using words to get their attention where as a Sunday morning church pastor might just read straight from the Bible and might come off as a little boring. At the end of church Zoey asked if we could go again next week and of course I sai d yes. She was starting to believe which made me feel great. I felt as if I had done something right and now Zoey might become a Christian. It all shows that even though we had our differences at first, it was right of me not to give up and let our friendship go because now Zoey is still a good friend of mine, and she truly believes in God and all He has done for us. I always remember that life lesson anytime I go anywhere some one might not be a believer in Christ, because now I know that anyone can believe in Him. That is His power that he gives us to tell others about Him, and help save each other from sin.

To Room Nineteen free essay sample

Reading the fifth chapter of Yi-Fu Tuan’s  Space and Place  alongside â€Å"To Room Nineteen† helps us to understand the counterintuitive notions of space and freedom Lessing describes in her story. In this way, Tuan’s insight helps us recognize Susan’s fear of responsibility and desire for freedom as they relate to the places in her life. From the outside, it seems as though Susan lives the ideal life with a big house and a beautiful garden for her children and loving husband. However, as the story progresses, we see that Susan becomes more and more â€Å"reluctant to enter her big beautiful home† (Lessing 530). This same attractive, picture-perfect house begins to push Susan away, for in it are the many responsibilities that come with adult-life and motherhood. The more these responsibilities weighed down on Susan, the more it felt â€Å"as if something was waiting for her there she did not wish to confront† (530). We will write a custom essay sample on To Room Nineteen or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page This seems strange because, typically, â€Å"spaciousness is closely associated with [freedom]† as Tuan explains in  Space and Place  (52). By this logic, one would think that Susan would feel plenty free in her big home with the spacious, lush garden to wander through. However, although â€Å"freedom implies space,† space does not always imply freedom (52). What Susan truly needed was space from her family, and freedom from her responsibilities. This becomes evident when Susan takes her vacation to the mountains in Wales. Physically, she had all the space in the world, from huge mountains to tall skies and deep valleys. But with her family calling her multiple times a day, Susan felt like â€Å"the telephone wire [was] holding her to her duty like a leash† (Lessing 538). Tuan explains this phenomenon by stating that â€Å"solitude is broken not so much by the number of organisms in nature as by the sense of busy-ness—including busy-ness of the mind† (61). This is exactly what Susan felt, for although she was alone physically, her family weighed down on her mind constantly, ruining her sense of solitude. Though they tried to be helpful and supportive, Susan’s family couldn’t understand this critical concept. Had they been able to go a few days without calling her or without Mrs. Parkes nagging her with household business, perhaps Susan’s vacation would have appeased her craving for solitude. Alas, the opportunity was spoiled and Susan returned to her home feeling more exhausted than when she had left. For all of these reasons, Susan felt it necessary to seek out Room 19 in Fred’s Hotel. This was Susan’s escape, not because it was a vast, open land like the mountains were, but because no one knew she was there. It didn’t even matter that â€Å"the room was hideous† because â€Å"she was free† (Lessing 541). The room she was shown was small and dingy, with only one small window and cheap looking sheets on the sole bed that was there. All Susan needed was to be â€Å"alone and with no one knowing where [she was]† (Lessing 537). In this way Susan’s relationship with the dreary motel room allows us to understand the counterintuitive notion of freedom as relating to space. This was the only place she could get away from herself and be free. Here, â€Å"she was no longer Susan Rawlings†¦ she had no past, no future† and it had nothing to do at all with physical space (542). Instead, it was the cramped little motel room that gave Susan her freedom, giving us insight as to why she searched out Room 19. We also saw something interesting in the scene where Susan meets Mrs. Townsend. The presence of just one other person ruined Susan’s entire attempt at solitude. Here, we can compare Susan to the pianist Tuan discusses on page fifty-nine of his book. He explains that for a shy pianist practicing alone in a room, the presence of just one person shatters his world and forces him to stop his work immediately. Like the pianist, Susan’s solitude was obviously tarnished by the presence of others. Tuan touches on this idea as well when he says that â€Å"the company of human beings—even [one] other person—has the effect of curtailing space† (59). He explains that when we are alone, we can allow our thoughts to â€Å"wander freely over space,† but that â€Å"in the presence of others, [our thoughts] are pulled back by an awareness of other personalities who project their own world onto the same area† (59). Another crucial aspect of Susan’s solitude wasn’t just that no one was around, but that no one knew where she was. Tuan explains why Susan’s solitude is tarnished even with someone’s mere knowledge of her location, saying that â€Å"crowding is an awareness that one is observed† (60). Once Susan felt that her husband was keeping a close eye on her, the feeling she got from the room â€Å"was not the same, [for] her husband had searched her out† (544). Her husband’s suspicions were completely understandable, but at the same time, had he respected Susan’s need to be away, perhaps her hunger for solitude would have remained sated by the little motel room she had found. It also becomes clear throughout the story that Susan desperately needed to escape her household responsibilities in addition to her family. Between hiring a fulltime  au pair  girl and running off to London for the hotel, it is clear that Susan had no interest in being with her family at home. Even when she was home for supper, all she could think about was how desperate she was to be alone again. The association she made between her responsibilities and her house drove her away to be in Room 19 where she was completely alone and hidden from the outside world. There, she could let go of her life completely for the duration of the day and go back to pretending to love her home life at night. By understanding Susan’s relationships to her spaces, we can understand her need to escape the life she built for herself. Her detachment to her beautiful home signifies the way she let go of the perfect life she created with her family while her need for Room 19 highlights how much she wished to be completely alone. Once her husband found her out, the solitude that Susan had searched for so desperately was tarnished. After this, Susan felt cornered into escaping life altogether. No amount of space could satisfy her, because now it seemed that her family would find her even in the smallest and most hidden of places. The only way Susan could leave her life behind completely was by taking it herself, and she finds this permanent escape in Room 19, the only place that allowed her to be completely free.

Effects of Television Violence essays

Effects of Television Violence essays What has the world come to these days? It often seems like everywhere one looks, violence rears its ugly head. We see it in the streets, back alleys, school, and even at home. In many peoples' living rooms there sits an outlet for violence that often goes unnoticed. It is the television, and the children who view it are often pulled into its realistic world of violence scenes with sometimes devastating results. A lot of research has gone into showing why television and the things that take place on the screen affect kids. Research shows that movies and TV are definitely a major source of violent behavior in children. The research proves time and time again that aggression and television viewing do go hand in hand. It is true that violence on the boob tube affects children. Some are try to find a solution for the problem; others ignore it and hope that the problem disappears. However, the facts are undeniable. The research has been done and the information has resulted out to one co nclusion: Television violence causes children to be violent and the effected for the rest of their lives. The research proved my hypothesis. Violent television viewing does affect children. The effects have been seen in a number of cases. The First case In Alabama, a nine-year-old boy received a bad report card from his teacher. He suggested sending the teacher poisoned candy as revenge as he had seen on television the night before. In California, a seven-year-old boy sprinkled ground-up glass into the lamb stew the family was to eat for dinner. When asked why he did it he replied that he wanted to see if the results would be the same in real life as they were on television (Howe 72). In New York, a boy broke into a basement. When the police caught him and asked him why he was wearing gloves he replied that he had learned on television the when you wear gloves you do not leave fingerprints. These are just a few cases I discovered of how te...

Anything that relate to Macroeconomic Research Proposal

Anything that relate to Macroeconomic - Research Proposal Example It is observed that illegal Mexican immigrants are less likely to become US citizens. Mexico’s close proximity to the US and noticeable difference in the living standards or life quality between the two countries are the major reasons amplifying the rate of Mexican migration flow to the US. For many Mexican immigrants, just finding a job is the main goal of their migration to US. Statistical data indicate that the rate of illegal migration from communities all throughout Mexico to the US significantly increased during the 1980s. Undoubtedly, illegal immigration has notable effects on the US social system also. This paper will analyze whether or not the illegal Mexican immigration would benefit the US economy. History of Illegal Mexican Immigration The history of illegal Mexican immigration can be dated back to the mid-19th century. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo led to the end of Mexican-American War in 1848 and this treaty reduced the size of Mexico by 45% because Mexico was forced to surrender the land known today as California, Nevada, Arizona, and Utah to the United States. Following the war, Americans had to recruit many workers to build a railroad and to enhance other infrastructure development activities. For this, Americans brought roughly 55,000 migrant workers to former Mexican territories during the period 1850-1880. American leaders were happy to welcome Mexican immigrants because those immigrant workers were willing to work under harsh conditions even though they were paid substandard wages. The immigration flow to the US particularly increased from 1910 with the Mexican revolution. During this period, nearly 50,000 Mexican people migrated to the US every year in order to find a job. American leaders welcomed Mexican immigrants with open arms until they realized that the employment difficulties caused was the result of the increased Mexican immigration. In response to the public protests, the US government forcibly deported almost 2 million Mexican immigrants, including native-born Americans, to Mexico in 1929. During the time of the World War II, United States was badly in need of labors and hence the country again encouraged Mexican immigration. Based on the Bracero Program mutually agreed by US and Mexican officials, Mexican workers again migrated to the US until 1964. Since then the US government and corporations has been indirectly encouraging Mexican immigration flow so as to meet their labor needs at cheap costs. As many authors point out, there is an unspoken agreement between illegal Mexican immigrants, the US government, and corporations. Statistics of Illegal Mexican Immigrants According to the American Community Survey, 11,478,000 foreign born Mexican immigrants were residing in the US as of 2009 (as cited in border relations, n. d.). Mexican immigrants constituted 29.8% of all immigrant populations in US in the same year. As Valdes (2012) reported in CNN July 13, report published by the Pew Hispanic Cente r indicates that over 58% of the identified illegal immigrants in the US are Mexicans. Surveys also report that Mexican illegal immigrants mainly reside in states including California, Texas, Florida, and New York. It is observed that the Illegal Mexican population tends to concentrate in a different set of occupations as compared to other illegal population. However, nearly 1.4 million Mexicans including documented and undocumented immigrants moved

Observational Studies Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Observational Studies - Essay Example Even research that would seem, from a contemporary perspective, to be ideally suited as an observational study, like the characterization done in the 1920's by Arnold Gesell of the normal course of human development in the first 6 years of life, was carried out in a laboratory setting and followed stringent rules (Naturalistic results, 2004). An observational study (also called an epidemiological or population study), therefore is a research method that looks at large populations with an aim to find trends. It is usually retrospective that is, it examines what has happened in the past. For example, participants may fill out surveys or questionnaires on what they recall about particular behaviors, such as what foods they ate or what nutritional supplements they took in past years. Researchers simply look at what is already going on. Such research methods are often used to find connections between what people eat and the development of different diseases (Observational study, 2006). Observational studies include several observation methods such as: naturalistic observation, analog observation, self observation, and narrative observation. Naturalistic observation occurs when a researcher does observations in a naturally occurring situation, without having to get involved. In using the naturalistic observations method, the researcher makes no effort to control or change the situation. The research task is simply to make a comprehensive record of the proceedings that occur and of visible relationships between events. The main challenge in conducting naturalistic observation is to arrange the data collection so that the observer has a clear view of what occurs, but is not so prominent or noticeable that they become an object of interest or concern to participants (Naturalistic observation, n.d.). Examples of naturalistic observations without intervention include the early work of Jane Goodall on chimpanzees and of Dian Fossey on mountain gorillas as well as Timothy Perper's studies of flirting behavior in bars. Examples of naturalistic observation with intervention include participant observation studies in which a rese archer becomes part of a group in order to describe what members of the group do (Naturalistic research, 2004). Analogue observations Analogue observation involves the measurement of a client's obvious behavior in an artificial setting that is analogous to settings that the client is expected to encounter in his natural surroundings. The goal of analogue behavioral observation is to derive reliable estimates of the client's behavior in a current or future natural environment. The disadvantage of Analogue behavioral observation is that its instruments are often developed with insufficient attention to their psychometric properties, especially content weight. Although analogue behavioral observation instruments can be susceptible to change, their validity can corrode as time passes and is affected by various sources of discrepancy. However, analogue behavioral observation assessment is especially useful in detecting significant functional relations in clinical assessment (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2005 APA, all rights reserved;
